The biggest enemy to any performer/entrepreneur/whatever

A couple weeks ago, I heard about an act that was featured on America’s Got Talent. Something having to do with “flying trumpets”. So being a trumpeter, I wanted to check it out.

This guy was on a segway, moving around like a wizard, playing trumpet very poorly as backup to a pop song. And then there were little wings on the trumpets, and it would then fly around on the stage.

All in all, it was a rather ridiculous sight to behold. As a trumpeter myself, I felt a bit indignant watching him make a fool of himself on national television, playing an instrument I hold in high esteem, and that has been played by great men and women for all time.

But after the initial shock of the spectacle I had just witnessed, it occurred to me there really was something to what this guy had done, and something I think can be of value to anyone looking to build a following, a tribe, a fanbase, whatever you want to call it.

And that is he got a reaction. In this day and age, that in and of itself is no small feat. And when you see (or hear) the reaction, you realize there’s a very powerful lesson in it for us all to consider.

My solid, trustworthy and sturdy assistant Basmati and I discussed this on the Trumpet Dynamics podcast last week, and thought you might like to listen to what we had to say.

The Flying Trumpets portion begins at the 18:55 mark.
