The best day to release a podcast episode
Anytime I’m counseling a new client, be it in podcast production or simply consulting, the question “Which day of the week should I release my episodes?” This is assuming they publish an episode just one day per week.
It’s a good question, one of many to address when taking on a major project like a podcast, or any public type of endeavor for that matter. I could just as easily ask,”What’s the best day to schedule a lunchtime concert at the public square?”
The answer is the same, and that is, What day is best for you?
There is no “best day” to public a business podcast, or a musical one, or a true crime show, or have a concert in the park. At least on a public preference point of view. The best day is what suits you, the one doing all the work in the first place.
If you have a fetish for Thursdays because you are a fan of the Thor novels, then that’s a great day to publish episodes. It also gives a personal story for your show, one that will endear your listeners to you. I publish my episodes on Wednesdays and Fridays. I settled on these because I initially intended to publish on Mondays and Wednesdays, but time got away from me and I ended up with Wednesday and Friday that week, then I decided I need to stick with something so those two are as good as any.
A highly scientific approach, right?
The truth of the matter is that the preferences of your audience does need to be taken into consideration to some degree, but that is hardly the most important factor. What really matters is what turns you on. If you talk about things that light your fire, people will listen, even if they aren’t ordinarily interested in what you’re talking about. The day of the week the episode is published is probably the last thing anyone cares about.
What people really care about is that you just show up and take care of business on any day of the week. And be sure to give them something to think about while you’re at it.
