What it’s like to watch The Godfather with 3 women

We had a little movie party yesterday. Saturday is always my day off, and unless my wife is working Saturday in which case I’ll do a bit of work and then take Sunday off, it’s set in stone.

So we invited my friend and colleague Mandi (an American who specializes in making show notes for podcasts in case you’re in need of that service) and our friend Rosy, a Vietnamese lady who’s also been doing a bit of work for our little podcast production service.

So it’s me, my wife, Mandi and Rosy – watching The Godfather. I wanted to watch it (again) because I’m doing a bit of research for some…things that require research, and Mandi had never seen it. So I told her that if she wants to continue working with us, she needs to watch it ASAP.

The experience was a bit interesting.

For one, women always pick up on pieces of humor that men wouldn’t ordinarily find funny. Like the scene where Michael is hiding in Sicily, and his friend says, “Women in Sicily are more dangerous than rifles,” they laughed.

As a guy, I’m prone to take a line like that pretty seriously, but it’s actually a funny line. It is just a movie after all.

And then Rosy had to cover her eyes anytime there was any violence. It’s a good policy to be honest, and it made me think about how desensitized to violence I’ve become over the years consuming American pop culture.

And then they got giddy over things like Michael’s girlfriend trying to make contact with him while he’s getting married with one of those gorgeous women who is more dangerous than a rifle in Sicily. Again, different eyes view different things.

I tend to gloss over details like that; I’m thinking about how things are going to play out with the Corleone family in general. But women tend to be more concerned with things like relationships than men – and we’re better for it to be honest.

Overall, it was a fun experience, and we’ve already slated a viewing for The Godfather Part 2 next Saturday.

It’s nice to have fellowship with the people you work with, and we’re beginning to develop a bit of a rhythm, a flow if you will. If you’re in need of some help producing a podcast, or if you’re thinking of getting into podcasting and aren’t sure where to begin, then give us a shout. We’d be glad to help.
