3 things I’ll miss when we leave Vietnam

Our days in Vietnam are numbered. While I don’t know the exact number at this moment, the plan was never to stay here indefinitely. A few developments have…developed in the last couple of weeks that lead me to believe we may be cutting out of town sooner than later.

That being said, there are a few nice things about Vietnam I’ll definitely miss when we head to the U.S. (sometime this year)

1. Having a full breakfast including eggs, bacon, sausage and toast, delivered to my office for $4. Yep, cost of living is quite a bit lower here. I know of several foreigners who live on a salary of around $1k per month. They don’t live like kings, but they live and have a few thousand Vietnamese dong to splurge with here and there.

2. My office. I made a deal with a local business to rent out a room they had been using for storage. Nice location, and it’s on the first floor, so if I want to take a break, I can just walk right outside. Barefoot on the grass. Yeah, kind of nice.

3. Getting in a cab and thirty minutes later being in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world. While Hanoi isn’t a place we’d like to live, it most certainly is exciting. Funniest thing I’ve seen in the city is a family of four – plus the golden retriever – all piled onto a little motor bike cruising around the city.

Tomorrow I’ll discuss the things I won’t miss, including the freshly smoked muskrat we saw at a local, uh, establishment, filing government documents, and more.

Be well,

James Newcomb
