1 in 8 billion

A common objection to getting into podcasting is “there’s just so many of them, so why bother getting into it myself?”

I’ve heard that before I got involved with the craft in 2015, and many times since and it has always struck me as a bit of a cop out for not putting in the work. Perhaps due to laziness, or perhaps a lack of creativity or even self-esteem.

I’ve never thought my life was not worth living just because there are 8 billion other people on this planet. I have my own unique skills and personality and am able to carve out my own niche and “footprint” in spite of that supposed handicap. I’ve perhaps interacted with more types of people in the form of nationalities than the average bear while living abroad, but people are people no matter where in the world you happen to be. We all have the same basic desires, passions, lusts, cravings no matter where we live.

But it turns out that even with the 3 million or so podcasts listed on Apple, just a fraction of those are really churning out episodes. A very reliable source reported in a Facebook group I belong to that somewhere in the neighborhood of 12% of those 3 million have published more than 15 episodes and have published in the last 90 days.

So that takes out anywhere from 85-90% of the so-called competition right there. And when you factor in taking the time to dial into a niche where you can shine with your passion and interests, the competition is essentially non-existent. I check the podcast players from time to time, and there are maybe 1 or 2 podcasts that are dedicated to trumpet; and those ones are for the most part poorly produced with no real agenda or purpose for being. So I think I rest well worrying about my so-called competition in that space.

I take the same approach with my new Gone Newclear podcast. Sure there are a bunch shows out there, but this one is mine and so long as I put out decent content, people will listen. There’s no sense in psyching myself out with numbers like that.

I’ve been working on the new website for the Podcast Artistry service. If you or someone you know is thinking of getting into the podcasting game, I don’t think there’s ever been a better opportunity than now. And I’ll help dial in the perfect niche and message so that you’re getting the best bang for your buck.

This is not for the DIY types who are on a shoestring budget. The ideal client is someone or a business with a marketing budget and has the mindset of a podcast being an investment vs. an expense. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but the clients I’ve been working with, some for years, are seeing slow and steady growth, and you will too if you do the work.
